Vietnam has become one of the most interesting travel destinations for two main reasons. One is because it offers a great bargain for budget conscious tourists and two is because the people in Vietnam are very warm and welcoming to their visitors.

Plane tickets going to Vietnam are considered as one of the most affordable and reasonable travel deals. You can get to Ho Chi Minh City, which is known as Saigon among the Vietnamese in the south, all the way from the west coast of America in less than 19 hours and the deals includes 1 ½ hour layover.

The domestic transportation is also very budget-friendly. An open tourist bus ticket from Saigon going to Hanoi is only around $30.00 and as a tourist, you get to witness some of the country’s best sceneries and breathtaking views. If you do not want to take the bus, you have the option to take comfortable trains or planes. The 2-hour flight going to Hanoi from Saigon costs around $100.00. This can be considered a reasonable deal considering the amount of airfares in other places.

Vietnam’s tourist hotels are also very affordable yet inviting. The hotel staffs are courteous and accommodating. Tourists can travel from one town to another even without a reservation and can still find a suitable place to rest and spend the night.

The country takes pride on its rich mountains and lush green rice paddies as well as its sunny beaches. It is the home of 5 UNESCO World Heritage Sites including the Halong Bay.

Lastly, you will find Vietnamese cuisine as one of the finest and freshest as well. It consists of fresh ingredients from their local market such as fresh herbs and spices, vegetables and meat. Their chicken and seafood dishes are all appetizing specialties. Vietnamese dishes are light yet rich in flavours. They are a product of fusion between Oriental and some French influence. The taste is very satisfying and offers just the right mixture.

A travel to Vietnam is a wonderful experience you should not miss. It is guaranteed to leave you only with the best memories worth keeping.

Is Christmas in France and different from Christmas anywhere else? Well I guess that depends where you come from. For me as an Englishman there are quite a few similarities and, of course, quite a few differences.

Similar things would be Santa Claus (Père Noël) all over the place, shops suddenly hiding all the useful things and filing their shelves with toys instead, streets lit up and decorated, that kind of thing. Actually they seem to make a bit more of an effort with the street-lighting – even the small villages make the effort in France, which is not often the case in the UK.

Differences with a French Christmas? Well it’ still not quite so commercialized. Christmas doesn’t start until December here, whereas in England now the build-up seems to begin in September!

There are practical differences too. The local bread shop (boulangerie) is often open on Christmas morning for example, and Boxing Day is not a holiday. Most French are back at work unless it’s a weekend.

Christmas in France is still quite an important religious holiday and a big family event. The French are big on family. They are quite likely to have a turkey for the main meal, with chestnut stuffing, but they might equally have a goose or capon. The big difference with the main meal is that it will be on Christmas Eve – in the evening – and it doesn’t start until after midnight mass! Although perhaps less French go to midnight mass than they used to, the meal (le réveillon – it means the wake up!) goes on until the early hours of the morning.

Some parts of France still begin to celebrate on St Nicholas’ day, which is the 6th December, but 12th night means nothing to them. For us it’s when all the decorations have to come down (or else bad luck) but the French celebrate the arrival of the Kings on 6th January (fête des rois) and the decorations seem to stay up for weeks and weeks after that. Perhaps they’re just more festive than us!

Of course Christmas in France wouldn’t be complete without the Sapin De Noël – the Christmas tree – so we probably have more in common than we do that separates us. In the New Year, Epiphany is quite a big celebration and most communities are invited by the major for a glass of something sparkling at the local town or village hall. There’s also a cake with a small charm in it – much like the coin in a traditional Christmas pudding – although the cake is usually circular, flat and made of puff pastry and frangipane – very sweet.

Going on safari has to be a real treat for the senses. Everyday you wake and jump on that Game viewer, heading off on another action packed adventure into the African Bush. I’ve been there and done it, and all I can say is – definitely a good life experience.

Just imagine how you would feel when you stop and have a herd of elephant walk past the vehicle literally an arms length from you – so close you can smell them, and see every large body hair, and best of all make that trans-species eye contact which always puts one onto a high afterwards. Of course, at the time you would probably be holding your breath trying to melt into the frame of the Landrover for fear of being overly-intrusive towards the Pachyderms trundling past. But I highly recommend it – even at the expense of having to change your underwear!

One visit to Africa can literally change a person – it must be that primal link we have with the natural world which gets us tingling when confronted with nature in its raw form. Seeing a group of white rhino as you emerge from the grass into a clearing whilst on foot brings perspective into one’s life – we are just another of the many species on Earth, although admittedly, somewhat higher up on the ladder. Pedantics aside, when you find yourself in close proximity to a group of White rhino, you just somehow know your place – smart, but vulnerable. And using your wits is what puts you ahead of the game. Generally though, White rhino are a little more docile than their cousins, the Black rhino. So that close encounter in the clearing, if approached correctly, can bring a real sense of awesome wonder and enjoyment when seeing a group of animals that resemble something out of the dinosaur age.

And in the evening when you’re sitting around the fire recalling the days’ events, that beer will taste real good!

1. Check your flight status
2. Wear comfortable clothing
3. Be prepared
4. Know your rights

Checking in online will save you a lot of time and money. First, you can more often than not change your seating online when you are checking in. Also, some airlines charge a lower fee checking in your luggage online verses at the ticket counter.

Also tracking your flight and weather conditions can save you much unneeded stress. Airlines will inform you of any delays ahead of time if your flight is not arriving as scheduled. Prepare yourself for some delays depending on where you are departing from and where your final destination is located.

Depending on whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, it’s always a good idea to bring a change of clothing with you onboard in a carry bag. If for some reason you are delayed or if there is a loss of luggage, you will have clean, fresh clothing to change into.

When flying, wearing comfortable clothing will help make your waiting time and flight time more enjoyable and relaxing. If you have a connecting flight, it’s much easier to travel between terminals in comfortable clothing than business attire. Being comfortable is a key assets when traveling between flights.

Be totally prepared for anything. Having some music to play or a portable DVD player to listen to while onboard or in between flights helps pass the time much quicker than not having entertainment.

Bring a snack with you, even if you find your favorite food vendor or coffee shop in the airport terminal. Not all of them will have your favorite foods and are much more expensive than bringing your own.

Reading material is often another way to pass the time if you are an avid reader. Perhaps there is a book you have wanted to read but haven’t had the time. Because you never know how long you could be waiting in the plane or in the terminal.

Know your rights as a customer. Airlines will often overbook flights on purpose and may ask for volunteers. You can offer up your seat, but make sure you know what the policies are for the length of time you will have to wait for your next flight. Getting a free airline voucher is always an extra plus for your next trip. Also, those vouchers make wonderful gifts.

There are some regulations you should know about. If it’s more than four hours until your next flight, the airline should offer you cash or a voucher for a maximum amount and a food voucher. If its weather related issues for the delay, there is nothing you can do.

That is why you came totally prepared. Check the status of your flight prior to getting to the airport. You have a change of clothing in case they lose your luggage or there is an extreme weather delay. You have brought a healthy snack and have some entertainment.

If you find yourself sitting next to someone whom may appear to be a problem, inform the flight attendants and they can move you if there is seating available. You could end up in first class.
